Steel props are the core load-bearing components of formwork support systems, which directly bear the weight of formwork, concrete, construction equipment and construction personnel during the construction process. The rational selection of steel props is crucial to the safety, quality and efficiency of formwork support.Improper selection may lead to formwork deformation, collapse and other safety accidents, affecting the progress and quality of the project. Therefore, the selection of steel props for formwork support must follow scientific principles and comprehensively consider various influencing factors.
The first and most critical step in selecting steel props is to determine the load requirement and match the corresponding load-bearing capacity. Before selection,it is necessary to accurately calculate the total load that the steel props need to bear, including the dead load of the formwork and steel props themselves, the live load of concrete(usually 60-100 kN per prop in large-scale projects),the live load of construction personnel and equipment, and the additional load such as wind load and construction vibration.According to the calculated load, the rated load-bearing capacity of the selected steel props should be 1.2 to 1.5 times the actual calculated load to ensure sufficient safety margin. For example,if the actual calculated load per prop is 30 kN,steel props with a rated load-bearing capacity of not less than 36 kN should be selected. In addition, the load-bearing capacity of steel props is also related to their length:the longer the prop, the lower the load-bearing capacity due to the increase of slenderness ratio,so it is necessary to select props with appropriate load-bearing grades according to the actual height. For high-load scenarios such as large-span beams and thick slabs,heavy-duty steel props(such as Z-type disk buckle props with a design load-bearing capacity of up to 88.9 kN)should be preferred.
The second factor to consider is the construction height and adjustability of steel props. The adjustable range of steel props must match the height of the formwork support to ensure that the props can be flexibly adjusted to the required height and locked firmly.Common adjustable ranges of steel props are 800 mm to 5500 mm,and different height ranges correspond to different product specifications:for low-height formwork support(such as interior wall formwork,0.8 m to 1.5 m),short adjustable props can be selected;for medium-height support(such as residential floor slabs,1.5 m to 3.5 m),standard adjustable props are suitable;for high-height support(such as high-rise building core tubes,3.5 m to 5.5 m),long-span adjustable props or extended steel props should be selected. At the same time, the adjustment mechanism of the props should be reliable:thread adjustment is suitable for scenarios requiring high precision(adjustment accuracy 1-5 mm),while pin-type adjustment is more suitable for scenarios requiring fast adjustment. In addition, the top support(adjustable jacking)of the props should meet relevant standards, such as the screw diameter not less than 36 mm,the screw and nut screwing length not less than 5 buckles, and the top support steel plate thickness not less than 5 mm.
The material performance of steel props is another key factor affecting the selection. The common materials of steel props for formwork support are Q235,Q355(Q345)carbon structural steel and low-alloy high-strength steel, and the selection should be based on the load and environmental requirements.Q235 steel props have good economy and are suitable for medium and small load, ordinary construction scenarios;Q355 steel props have higher yield strength(not less than 355 MPa)and tensile strength, better toughness and impact resistance, and are suitable for high-load,complex construction scenarios such as high-rise buildings and bridge engineering, and can also be used in cold regions due to their excellent low-temperature performance. In addition, the surface anti-corrosion treatment of steel props should be considered:hot-dip galvanizing(complying with ISO 1461 standard)or zinc-aluminum alloy coating can effectively improve corrosion resistance, which is suitable for outdoor, coastal or humid construction environments, while ordinary painting treatment is suitable for indoor dry scenarios. Some advanced processing technologies, such as cold-formed steel processing, can increase the tensile strength of props by 40-60%compared with traditional hot-rolled processes, which is more suitable for high-demand projects.
The structural design of steel props also needs to be considered in the selection process. The structural design directly affects the stability and applicability of the props:the telescopic structure of inner and outer tubes should have a reasonable fit gap(too small affects adjustment, too large affects stability);the thread design should be reliable(rolled threads are preferred to enhance thread strength)to ensure smooth adjustment and firm locking;the base and top plate should be thick enough to evenly distribute the load and avoid local stress concentration. For formwork support systems with large span or high height, steel props with reinforced structures(such as thickened tube walls, reinforced connectors)should be selected to enhance lateral stability. In addition, the weight of the props should be balanced with construction efficiency:aluminum props are lighter and easier to transport and install, but have lower load-bearing capacity, suitable for small-scale,light-load projects;steel props are heavier but have higher strength and durability, suitable for large-scale,heavy-load projects.
The construction environment and relevant standards and certifications should also be taken into account when selecting. For outdoor,high-altitude or seismic construction scenarios, steel props with strong wind resistance and seismic performance(such as hydraulic shock-absorbing dampened props)should be selected to reduce horizontal force transmission by 55%or more. For projects exported to the European Union, steel props that comply with EN 1065 standard and have CE certification should be selected;for domestic projects, they should comply with national standards such as JGJ130-2011 and JGJ162-2008,and pass relevant quality inspections and certifications(such as ISO 9001,SGS)to ensure product quality and safety compliance. For projects in cold regions,Q355D or Q355E steel props with excellent low-temperature impact resistance should be selected to avoid brittle fracture in low-temperature environments.
In addition, the economy and reusability of steel props should be considered in the selection.Under the premise of meeting safety and performance requirements, products with high cost performance should be selected:compared with ordinary steel props,high-quality steel props with good durability and reusability(reusable for many times)can reduce long-term construction costs, even if the initial investment is slightly higher. At the same time,it is necessary to consider the matching of steel props with other components of the formwork support system(such as horizontal bracings, diagonal bracings, couplers),ensuring that the connection is smooth and the overall stability of the system is improved.
Finally,it should be emphasized that the selection of steel props for formwork support should not only rely on experience, but also be based on the engineering design scheme, load calculation and relevant construction standards. It is recommended to consult professional technical personnel or reliable manufacturers to select suitable steel prop specifications and models according to the specific conditions of the project. Before use,the quality of the selected steel props should be inspected, including whether the components are intact, whether the load-bearing capacity meets the requirements, whether the adjustment mechanism is flexible, and whether the anti-corrosion treatment is up to standard,so as to ensure the safety and stability of the formwork support system during use.
